The 2015 open enrollment period ran Nov. 15 to Feb. 15, with 8.6 million consumers using the HealthCare.gov platform and 2.8 million using the state-based marketplaces, HHS officials said.

The total number of enrollees was about 10 percent more than HHS had expected for the period, they noted.

In Pennsylvania, 471,930 enrollees signed up or were automatically renewed on the HealthCare.gov site. By metropolitan area, including bordering communities in other states, the numbers were 248,265 for Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington; 192,481 for New York-Newark-Jersey City; 78,840 for Pittsburgh; and 30,298 for Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton.

Additional details about Pennsylvania enrollees will come from the state and will be included in an upcoming monthly report, officials said.

Kevin Counihan, CEO of the Affordable Care Act Marketplace, said in a conference call that a record number of consumers signed up for coverage on the final day of enrollment.

“It was a blowout weekend for us, but we’re still refining the numbers and can’t make them public yet,” he said. “The numbers clearly validate the fact that we’re offering products and services that people value.”

HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell said in a news release that in the 37 states using HealthCare.gov, nearly 8 in 10 consumers had the option of getting covered for as little as $100 a month or even less with financial assistance that lowered the cost of their monthly premium.
