First Citizens next in line for Lancaster banking

First Citizens Community Bank of Mansfield, which entered the midstate market in late 2015, said it plans to open an office in a former National Penn Bank branch in Mount Joy.

First Citizens plans to move into the branch at 740 East Main St. by late August or early September, according to a news release.

The branch is one of four former branches of National Penn that are scheduled to be closed by BB&T, which bought National Penn.

Bank of Bird-in-Hand will occupy another one of the closing branches. It plans to open its second branch at 3540 Old Philadelphia Pike in Leacock Township.

In recent months, a number of community banks have either beefed up their staff in Lancaster County or opened new branches in the market to take advantage of the disruption sparked by recent acquisitions. A group of investors, meanwhile, is forming a new bank.

First Citizens President and CEO Randall E. Black said the market disruption allowed the bank to move into the county.

“The Mount Joy location provides us the opportunity to leverage the strength and support of our south central offices combined with our years of success in serving the agriculture market, small businesses and rural communities,” he said.

First Citizens, whose primary territory is in northern Pennsylvania, has about $1.2 billion in assets. It acquired First National Bank of Fredericksburg in Lebanon County in December.
