Koppmann will oversee all the banking operations for M&T in Adams, Berks, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Northampton and York counties.

He takes over the title from Joe Crosswhite, who had been in the position since the late 1990s. Crosswhite will continue as the bank’s Pennsylvania-area executive, overseeing the bank’s operations throughout most of the state.

Koppmann has been with M&T since 1990, and most recently had been commercial real estate group manager for the bank’s Harrisburg market.

Koppmann is entering an area with heavy market disruption thanks to the bank acquisitions that have taken place in the last 15 months. Lancaster County appears to be ground zero for that disruption, with community banks beefing up their presence in the county and some entering the market for the first time to take advantage of the disruption and acquire new customers and clients.

According to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., M&T Bank has the ninth-largest deposit market share in Lancaster County. For its seven-county southeast region, it has the seventh-highest deposit market share.

Koppmann said he doesn’t expect Buffalo, N.Y.-based M&T to go through any serious expansion efforts in Lancaster County as some of the community banks have.

“I’m very familiar with (the market disruption),” he said. “We’ve all seen it for quite some time. I think at the end of the day, we rely on our own business model of fostering a deep understanding of the plans, goals and dreams of our customers and help make that happen for them. I think we have a great presence there today. There are a lot of things to like about Lancaster County, but that said, there are a lot of things to love about all of the markets in the region.”

Koppmann will be relocating to the region from his current home of State College. He is a graduate of Canisius College in the Buffalo area and received his master’s degree from State University of New York at Buffalo.

M&T Bank has about $125 billion in assets.
