The York County Convention & Visitors Bureau invites all interested groups to attend one of the workshops to learn how to leverage the new York County Tourism Grant Program to invest in their business.

The workshops are scheduled:

• Wednesday, Jan. 4, at 8 a.m. at PeoplesBank Park, 5 Brooks Robinson Way, just off North George Street, York.

• Thursday, Jan. 12, at 1:30 p.m. at the Hanover Heritage & Conference Center, 22 Carlisle St., Hanover.

Those interested in attending should RSVP to [email protected] and indicate which meeting they plan to attend and the total number of their party. In case of inclement weather, snow dates will be Jan. 5 and 13.

The grants are “designed to offer financial support to initiatives deemed capable of generating broad and substantial benefit to York County tourism,” a tourism bureau news release said.

Initial grant proposals are due Feb. 15, and must be a request for $2,500 or more, bureau officials said. A grant committee will make the final decision on recipients, who will be announced June 1.

A second round of consideration will be made for grants of $10,000 or less. Grants require a cash or in-kind match of 25 percent of the awarded amount, officials also explained.

The York County Commissioners and the visitors’ bureau recently agreed on the distribution of local hotel room tax proceeds, which fund both the bureau and the grant program.

York County is the first in the state to invest nearly half of its room-tax proceeds in a tourism grant program, tourism bureau officials also said, and it has become a leader in the area of “sports tourism” and in attracting sports and other events to the York area.
