Wolf to address opioids at Geisinger symposium

The invitation-only symposium, at the Geisinger Medical Campus in Danville, begins Wednesday and continues through Friday, Nov. 10. Wolf’s presentation will take place Thursday afternoon.
In Pennsylvania, there were 4,642 fatal drug overdoses in 2016, a 37 percent increase over 2015, the state Attorney General’s office has said. Fighting the growing epidemic of addiction and death has become a focus for state and federal officials.
The Wolf administration’s efforts have included funding for 45 treatment centers throughout the state, Geisinger officials said, including a $1 million grant to Geisinger’s Medication Assisted Therapy clinics.
Formally dubbed “From Crisis To Cure: Revitalizing America’s Healthcare System,” the symposium will include presentations by several speakers, including Gail Wilensky, health care economist and former White House adviser to President George H.W. Bush; and Ezekiel J. Emanuel, former health care adviser to President Barack Obama. U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey will give a video address on Thursday morning.
“This gathering puts Geisinger on a national stage and gives us an opportunity to showcase what we’re doing,” Geisinger President and CEO David Feinberg said.
