Demolition contracts awarded for Yorktowne Hotel
Listen to this articleYork County Industrial Development Authority, which owns the historic structure at Duke and Market streets in downtown York, said demolition and remediation work is expected to take about six months to complete.
The four contractors taking on the project are:
- EHC Associates Inc., based in Upper Leacock Township, will work on asbestos abatement and selective interior demolition.
- Terra Technical Services of Downingtown will do bulk demolition of the parking garage and the hotel above the garage.
- James Craft & Son Inc. of Newberry Township was awarded the mechanical systems capping and demolition.
- I.B. Abel Inc. of York will handle electrical demolition.
Those contracts are worth about $2.9 million collectively, according to the authority.
Meanwhile, a design team continues to work on plans for rebuilding the interior spaces and renovating the hotel. That work should be put out for bidding this summer, according to the authority.
“These contracts signify a major milestone along the path to the new Yorktowne Hotel,” said Jack Kay, chair of the YCIDA. “With the start of demolition of the old parking garage, and the 1957 addition which is about to begin, we look forward to the creation of a new arrival plaza in that space, built around a circular drive with access from Market and Duke streets. This is just the beginning of the new Yorktowne.”
When it first closed, the hotel project had been slated for completion by November 2018. It now looks like the earliest opening will be spring 2019, although Kay said in December that target is an estimate.
The hotel’s importance to York was emphasized when it was bought in December 2015 by the authority. The deal came with a grant of $10 million from the Pennsylvania Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program, with the idea that matching funds would be raised.
