The discount retailer is expected to join the lineup at the York Galleria Mall in Springettsbury Township by the end of next month, said Katie Babb, marketing specialist for The TJX Companies Inc., Marshalls’ parent.

The store is the third retailer filling in space previously occupied by J.C. Penney’s. In general, Babb added, most Marshalls stores are roughly 25,000 square feet.

“We’re really excited about this,” Lucinda Hartshorne, general manager at York Galleria, said. “This [will be] the first Marshalls in York.”

The closest stores to York are currently one in Lancaster County and a Marshalls & HomeGoods in Cumberland County.

Additional information about the new York Marshalls will not be available until closer to the opening, Babb said.

The mall at 2889 Whiteford Road opened in 1989 is currently home to about 90 stores and three department stores.

In the last two years, Hartshorne said the Galleria has restocked almost 100,000 square feet with new stores. They include a Victoria’s Secret & PINK store, Bath & Body Works, White Barn Candle Co., an expanded rue21 and a new Foot Locker, as well as Gold’s Gym and H&M, both of which filled the anchor space left by previous tenant J.C. Penney.

“We’re really excited for these new offerings for our customers,” Hartshorne said, adding that the H&M was also a first in York.

Hartshorne said negotiations are underway to fill other vacancies at the York Galleria, but she declined to offer additional details.

The founder of the Marshalls department store chain, Alfred Marshall, started by selling cosmetics and products for babies out of a grocery store in Beverly, Mass., until he received financing from two partners and Marshall’s was born. In 1976, when he and three other partners had built the chain to nearly 40 stores, Marshalls was sold to Melville Corp.

Marshalls was purchased by TJX Companies in 1995. At the time, Marshalls had 496 stores. In 2015, Marshalls opened its 1,000th store.
