The news comes a month after current CEO Jim Warner announced plans to retire at the end of the year.

Zorbaugh, the authority’s COO, will take the helm of the authority on Jan. 1.

The decision was ratified by the authority’s board of directors at a March 16 public.

“I believe our board made a wise decision, and I look forward to assisting Bob’s transition into his new role as CEO,” Warner said in a statement.

Zorbaugh began his career with the authority in 1990 as a construction inspector at the Frey Farm Landfill. Zorbaugh served in a variety of management roles from 1993 onward. In 2010, he was named COO.

“I’m honored the board selected me as the next CEO for this great organization, of which I’ve been a part for almost three decades,” Zorbaugh said in a statement. “I’m also excited about Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority’s future and look forward to continue working with our outstanding employees to fulfill the organization’s mission.”

Starting this August, Zorbaugh will serve as co-CEO with Warner, as Zorbaugh transitions into the role next year.

Based in Manheim Township, the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority operates with an $85 million budget and manages nearly 1 million tons of waste annually.

Its nationally recognized system serves 810,000 residents in Lancaster and Dauphin counties. The system includes three facilities in Lancaster County: a transfer station in Lancaster, a waste-to-energy facility in Conoy Township and a landfill in Conestoga.

The authority also operates the incinerator in Harrisburg.
