AT&T closing call center, laying off 101 in Susquehanna Township
Listen to this articleA June 15 notice filed with the state under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, or WARN, Act, said the call center at 2550 Interstate Drive will be shut down and there will be two rounds of layoffs: one effective Aug. 15 for 92 employees and another on Aug. 24 for nine managers.
Company spokesman Marty Richter said call center operations are being consolidated into other U.S. facilities to increase overall efficiency.
“We’re not eliminating any jobs,” he said. “We’re offering virtually all the affected employees the opportunity to work in another of our call centers in Grayson, Kentucky, and a relocation allowance. We hope as many as possible stay with us, and we’ll be doing additional hiring in other company locations to make up for any who elect not to do so.”
AT&T declined to provide numbers on how many employees will remain in the building after the call center closes, but Richter said some will remain.
“It’s not our building; the lease on our space there is expiring and we are assessing the best course of action for our future needs in the location,” he said.
The building’s owner, Wormleysburg-based Linlo Properties, said Tuesday morning that it was still trying to get more information about AT&T’s future as a tenant.
AT&T said last week that the merger with Time Warner would lead to $2.5 billion in synergies annually by the end of the merger’s third year. Of that total, $1.5 billion is expected to be cost savings.
The company already has announced some executive changes, including the ouster of Turner Broadcasting CEO John Martin.
