Italian restaurant and bakery opens in former New Cumberland sub shop
Listen to this articleThe newcomer is Zanelli’s, which had been operating in Dover and as a vendor at Central Market in York. It has now moved operations to New Cumberland and opened at 316 Bridge St., a storefront that last housed Shugar’s Philly Deli.
Shugar’s abruptly closed around Christmas after about four years. The space was previously occupied for nearly 20 years by The Dingeldein Bakery.
Zanelli’s is serving up homemade pasta dishes, pizzas and Italian pastries, along with other items such as steak and seafood.
The owner of the new restaurant announced plans for the space in April. A formal grand opening event will be held on Saturday.
As part of the restaurant’s move, Hanna’s Ice Cream Shoppe, which shared space with Shugar’s, has relocated across the street to 321 Bridge St.
On that side of the street, a group of investors that includes Mayor Doug Morrow has been redeveloping the former Coakley’s Restaurant and Irish Pub into new restaurant and retail spaces.
Coakley’s, which spanned multiple parcels along Bridge and Third streets, was a longtime borough establishment closed by bankruptcy in 2014.
New tenants have been filling it back in. Recent newcomers include Lemoyne-based Dead Lightning Distillery, which opened a retail tasting room in March at 311 Bridge St. The distillery joined Funtastik, a skateboarding and snowboarding shop, that opened at 309 Bridge St.
The nearby West Shore Theatre also is under new ownership. Plans are in the works to revive the space as a theater under a Friends of the West Shore Theatre organization.
