Construction

Manchester Township-based York Builders Association gave Carmine Pantano its 2018 Mack Smith Award for his commitment to the goals and objectives of the association and contributions to the association, the profession and the community. Pantano is owner of Frank’s Marble & Granite, Red Lion.

Rapho Township-based ABC Keystone Center for Construction Careers announced these awards:

  • 2017-2018 Craft Instructor of the Year: Electrical Instructor Terry Boyer, retired, of Lititz.
  • 2018 Craft Professionals of the Year: Phil Garrett, Wohlsen Construction Co. of Lancaster, for carpentry; and Jason Stevens, Technivate Inc. of Landenberg, for site work.
  • Five apprentices, from among 57 apprentice graduates, received the High Achiever Award, for earning the highest grade point average in their trades, with a minimum GPA of 93 percent: Travis B. Duncker of Etters for sheet metal, Frey Lutz Corp. of Lancaster; Jonathan E. Godinez of Lancaster for carpentry, Benchmark Construction Co. Inc. of Brownstown; Travis A. Government

Harrisburg-based Pennsylvania Council on the Arts named the winners of its Governor’s Awards for the Arts, which honor outstanding Pennsylvania artists, arts organizations, cultural leaders and patrons who have made significant contributions to the advancement of the arts. The 2018 honorees are: Distinguished Arts Award: playwright Quiara Alegría Hudes, Philadelphia; Lifetime Achievement in the Arts: furniture designer Mira Nakashima, New Hope; Artist of the Year Award: fiber artist Tina Williams Brewer, Pittsburgh; Special Recognition for Advancing the Arts: family-owned guitar manufacturer C.F. Martin & Co. Inc., Nazareth; and Arts Leadership & Service Award: media company Scribe Video Center, Philadelphia.

Gov. Tom Wolf gave a Governor’s Award for Excellence to Beth Ann Heckman Shuttlesworth for her dedication to the state’s 820,000 veterans and their families and to the support of nearly 20,000 members of the Pennsylvania National Guard. Shuttlesworth, of Williamstown, works for the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.

Hospitality

Travel website BedandBreakfast.com named Pheasant Field Bed and Breakfast of Middlesex Township to its list of Top 25 Bed and Breakfasts in the country for 2017.

Nonprofits

Lancaster Township-based Junior League of Lancaster named three winners of its 2018 Deborah P. Altman Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award: Thomas Moore of Manheim Township High School; Dory Bittle of Lancaster Country Day School; and Sinclaire Schuetze of Hempfield High School. Each student received $600, of which $100 will be given to a charity of their choosing. The students designated, respectively, Manheim Township Recreation and Park Planning, Horizons at Lancaster Country Day School, and the Marfan Foundation.

York-based Leadership York gave The York Water Co. its 2018 Outstanding Business of the Year award for the utility’s ongoing commitment to leadership development and community involvement.

Harrisburg-based World Affairs Council gave 2018 Torch of Global Enlightenment Awards to five individuals: Dr. Kay White, former director of the Governor’s School; Rubina Azizdin, Central Penn College associate director of career services; Norman Bristol Colon, Pennsylvania Department of State director of special projects and assistant to the Secretary of State; Clem Gilpin, retired Penn State University professor; and Dr. Badiah Haffejee, associate professor at Elizabethtown College. Special teacher Torch Awards went to Angela Kamps of Cedar Cliff schools and Jim Bogdan of Milton Hershey School. Torch organization honorees included: PSECU, UPMC Pinnacle, Rotary Club of Harrisburg, World Trade Center of Harrisburg, Mid Penn Bank and the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs.

Susquehanna Township-based Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence gave George E. Fitch Jr. its Central PA 2018 Excellence in Male Leadership Award, for community leaders who demonstrate healthy masculinity, promote healthy relationships, serve as a positive mentor to boys and young men, and who are allies to those working as advocates against domestic and sexual violence.
