The Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office said Monday that Timothy Meyers, 56, of Reedsville, filed a false claim with Erie Insurance in Mechanicsburg in April 2017 over the loss of food. Meyers owns discount grocery firm Helping Hand Up, which provides affordable groceries to people in need.

According to investigators, Meyers claimed a refrigeration malfunction caused his company to lose nearly $11,000 in food products. The investigation found that the food items which had been claimed as destroyed were in fact sold after the insurance claim was submitted.

The DA’s office said Meyers also inflated the value of those items in order to increase his compensation.

He faces one count of insurance fraud and one count of theft by deception. A preliminary hearing is slated for Sept. 26, according to court documents.
