On Sept. 26, the sandwich shop chain will open its 44th location. The new 5,500 square-foot store is located in Derry Township at 131 W. Chocolate Ave and expected to include about 80 jobs, said Ryan Wilkinson, director of marketing for Primanti Bros. Company-wide, the chain has approximately 2,000 employees.

Unlike the eatery’s original location, the newest Primanti Bros. will open as a full-service restaurant with a large bar, equipped with several televisions and an indoor/outdoor patio.

The chain is known for its “Almost Famous” sandwich, which is stuffed with grilled meat, an optional egg, secret recipe sweet-and-sour slaw, fresh-cut fries and two tomato slices, and tucked between two slices of Italian bread.

The business began in 1933 when Joe Primanti opened a lunch cart in Pittsburgh’s Strip District selling sandwiches to truckers who were coming and going at all times of day. Encouraged by sales and positive feedback, he expanded his cart to a small storefront and went into business with his brothers Dick and Stanley and their nephew John DePriter, according to a news release.

To celebrate the opening of the Derry Township store, the eatery is giving away 100 free sandwiches for a year to the first 100 customers through the door at the new location, starting at 10 a.m. Before that starts, Primanti Bros. is hosting a tailgating celebration beginning at 5:30 a.m., which includes games, music and samples of the restaurant’s cuisine and beverages in its parking lot. The restaurant opens to in-house diners at 11 a.m.

The sandwich chain is also eyeing another location in the Capital City Mall, next to the Fine Wine & Good Spirits Premium Collection store.
