But the team failed to nab the top spots. HU’s new varsity team lost to a pair of Missouri schools — Maryville University and Columbia College — in the $50,000 grand prize tournament, the largest collegiate esports tournament to date.
Maryville University, which is in St. Louis, won the Overwatch tournament. Columbia College, based in Columbia, won the League of Legends tournament.
The HUE Festival was held Friday and Saturday in downtown Harrisburg. It included 21 schools and 32 esports teams competing in League of Legends, a multiplayer battle-arena video game, and Overwatch, a team-based multiplayer video game.
Spectators packed the 700-seat theater at the Whitaker Center, and Twitch viewership exceeded 5,000 during the live gameplay, HU officials said.
The event doubled as a music festival.
Thousands of people came out Saturday for a free, live music concert experience, with headlining performances from Lit, Alien Ant Farm, and Atlas Genius. Vendors and food trucks also lined the streets downtown.
HU thanked all participants
